Crusoe, 10 p.m. Friday, WFLA: Filmed on location with a high budget, this revival of stranded 17th century Englishman Robinson Crusoe’s classic story turns Friday into a friend rather than a manservant and Crusoe into an island refugee capable of building machines worthy of Rube Goldberg or MacGyver. Crusoe needs them when he’s caught between murderous pirates and Spanish soldiers; cameos from Sean Bean and Sam Neill only add to the prestige.
The rain poured down and many of the men sleeping on the battlefield that night were crippled with dysentery. Some were also doubtful about the cause for which they were about to fight, but this month, as we approach the anniversary of the Battle of Agincourt, fought on 25 October 1415, a novel commemorating the English triumph 593 years ago has leapt to the top of the bestsellers’ list after just five days on the market.
Agincourt, by Bernard Cornwell, the creator of fictional Napoleonic soldier Richard Sharpe, is quickly confounding expectations for historical fiction, with one of the country’s largest book chains, Waterstones, reporting unprecedented sales. ‘Bernard’s books are always bestsellers, but we seem to be reaching an even wider readership with this book,’ said Amanda Ridout, managing director of publishing house HarperCollins.
As the author of the successful series of 21 books chronicling the adventures of Sharpe, played on the small screen by Sean Bean, Cornwell has a big fan base. His reputation for meticulously detailing the experiences of soldiers has seen the new novel - the title is the site’s French name - sell 13,000 copies.

The award-winning series Sharpe, starring Sean Bean, returns for another action-packed adventure. It’s India, 1818 and Lt Col Richard Sharpe and Sergeant Major Patrick Harper are travelling across India, escorting the beautiful Marie-Angelique Bonnet to meet her fiancée. While in bandit-plagued badlands, they come across the very dregs of the Crown’s troops; an ill disciplined, rag-tag unit led by boy soldier Beauclare. As Sharpe and company sit down to have dinner with their hosts, the camp comes under attack by the notorious bandit Chitu. As the dust settles, it becomes apparent there have been many casualties and Sharpe realises that he is the only person now capable of getting this wagon train to the safety of the next army garrison. Little does Sharpe know that the adventure has only just begun and that he has inadvertently stumbled across a massive opium trafficking ring…

HOLLYWOOD star Sean Bean will attend the memorial service being held for campaigning journalist Adrian Sudbury next week.
The Sheffield-born actor, 49, will give a reading at the service at Sheffield Cathedral on October 16.
The service, starting at 2pm, will celebrate the life of Adrian, who died of leukaemia in August, aged just 27.

The borough has been selected to launch a major British film based on the book Cass - nearly two weeks before it is shown in London.
The decision was made by the writer of the autobiography of the same name, Cass Pennant, who was born in Doncaster but moved from the area as a small child.
Cass, who was born in Hyde Park, is a reformed football hooligan who renounced violence to become a writer and publisher. His autobiography became a bestseller
