Bethesda’s huge success, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion was a Role Playing Game not to miss on the Xbox 360 when it was first released. Boasting an enormous landscape to explore, hours of play time and a first class cast (wait, that was really Sean Bean?) it was of great satisfaction to most people that it was actually really fun to play. The term Downloadable Content (DLC) had been banded around by the hardcore gamers and Microsoft’s publishing arm, but before Oblivion it certainly wasn’t mainstream.
After spending hours hacking your way through the (truly brilliant) game we all wanted more. Bethesda obliged, promising DLC for us to enjoy. Then it hit. The Horse Armour. It was released onto the Xbox Live Marketplace for 200 Microsoft points (£1.70 - a price it remains even today), as a way of judging what the right price point for DLC was. Ignoring my personal opinion that charging for ‘Themes’ and ‘Gamer Pictures’, essentially free publicity, for upcoming games seems ludicrous, the Horse Armour upset quite a few people.

The chosen Sheffield Legend will have their name inscribed on a plaque set into the pavement outside the town hall, in the style of Hollywood Boulevard.

They are World Cup-winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks, actor Sean Bean, musicians Jarvis Cocker and Joe Cocker, athlete Sebastian Coe, footballer Derek Dooley, boxing trainer Brendan Ingle, rock band Def Leppard, designer David Mellor, writer and comedy star Michael Palin, artist Joe Scarborough, astronaut Helen Sharman and rock climber Joe Simpson.

Sometimes bad things happen to great casts – just look at Outlaw. You’d think that putting Sean Bean, Bob Hoskins and Danny Dyer in the same movie would be a recipe for a taut, finessed actioner, but in this case, the movie simply doesn’t gel. It attempts to engage themes involving the war in Iraq into its cynical frame (which is, of course, wildly admirable), but its final twenty minutes are beyond ridiculous – Outlaw’s coda is so painfully odious that it all but undoes the noble work done by its performers. |
