DVD Update UK

Sharpe's Peril The award-winning series Sharpe, starring Sean Bean, returns for another action-packed adventure. It’s India, 1818 and Lt Col Richard Sharpe and Sergeant Major Patrick Harper are travelling across India, escorting the beautiful Marie-Angelique Bonnet to meet her fiancée. While in bandit-plagued badlands, they come across the very dregs of the Crown’s troops; an ill disciplined, rag-tag unit led by boy soldier Beauclare. As Sharpe and company sit down to have dinner with their hosts, the camp comes under attack by the notorious bandit Chitu. As the dust settles, it becomes apparent there have been many casualties and Sharpe realises that he is the only person now capable of getting this wagon train to the safety of the next army garrison. Little does Sharpe know that the adventure has only just begun and that he has inadvertently stumbled across a massive opium trafficking ring…

The Whip’s Blue-ray Review: National Treasure

THE MOVIE: 4 stars out of 5
National Treasure stars Nicolas Cage as Benjamin Franklin Gates who is obsessed with both his family history in the founding of the republic and with finding the legendary Knights Templar Treasure, the greatest treasure known to man. In order to find the treasure he receives financial and technical support from Ian Howe (Sean Bean) who turns on him and abandons him in hope of finding the treasure himself. Gates and Howe discover that the key to finding the treasure rests with a secret map on the back of the Declaration of Independence which Gates races to steal before it can be stolen by Howe. Needless to say, Gates is successful in his attempt to steal the Declaration but is eventually captured and forced to cooperate with Bean to escape the FBI and locate the treasure.

While the premise of the film is rather over the top and totally implausible, the film itself is just good enough to get you to suspend your disbelief and by throwing in just enough actual historical facts to pull you into the action and suspense. The film was filmed in Washington, Philadelphia and New York and takes you into the National Archives in DC, Independence Hall, The Franklin Institute, The Reading Terminal Market and historic sections of Philadelphia and Wall Street in New York. National Treasure is a very enjoyable fast paced film and one I can recommend heartedly for fans of action adventures.

This week in dvd’s

from Entertainment Today

Sometimes bad things happen to great casts – just look at Outlaw. You’d think that putting Sean Bean, Bob Hoskins and Danny Dyer in the same movie would be a recipe for a taut, finessed actioner, but in this case, the movie simply doesn’t gel. It attempts to engage themes involving the war in Iraq into its cynical frame (which is, of course, wildly admirable), but its final twenty minutes are beyond ridiculous – Outlaw’s coda is so painfully odious that it all but undoes the noble work done by its performers.
